South Carolina Offices Responsible for Life InsuranceThe South Carolina Department of Insurance (SCOID) describes its mission as "the protection of consumers, the public interest, and the insurance marketplace" through the maintenance and regulation of the insurance industry. The Department of Insurance publishes a consumer guide that includes information about how much life insurance a person needs and what kinds of life insurance are available. The Department also accepts consumer complaints via an online complaint form. The South Carolina laws regarding insurance are recorded under Title 38 of the State’s Code of Laws. Chapter 63 of this title contains articles on provisions, policy forms, and the standard nonforfiture law for individual life insurance. Chapter 65 deals with those same articles for group life insurance. Life Insurance for State EmployeesEmployees of the state of South Carolina, their spouses and their children are eligible for life insurance. Those enrolled in the State Health Insurance plan receive $3,000 of life insurance with no premiums. There are a number of other options for school, university, and other state employees for higher amounts life insurance coverage, including plans through Aflac, AIG and American-Amicable.
